Overview

There is a moment, right at the top of a Saharan dune, when you look down at the slope of golden sand stretching beneath you and think, this is either going to be incredible or very humbling. Either way, you are going to love it.

Sandboarding in Morocco is one of those experiences that sounds adventurous on paper and feels even better in real life. Part surfing, part snowboarding, part pure desert chaos, it is the kind of activity that makes for the best stories from any Morocco trip. No experience needed. No special skills required. Just a board, a dune, and the willingness to go for it.

Where to Ride: The Best Sandboarding Spots in Morocco

Erg Chebbi, Merzouga This is the one most people picture when they think of the Moroccan Sahara. Towering dunes in deep shades of orange and gold, wide open skies, and sunrises that look almost too beautiful to be real. Erg Chebbi is the most accessible of the major ergs and the perfect starting point for first-time sandboarders. The dunes are dramatic enough to give you a real ride without being overwhelming. Hit it at sunrise and you will have the slopes almost entirely to yourself.

Erg Chigaga If Erg Chebbi is the popular one, Erg Chigaga is the soul of the Sahara. Stretching across roughly 35km x 15km with dunes climbing up to 50 meters high, this remote erg draws artists, photographers, and travelers who want something rawer and less touched. Getting here takes effort, which is exactly why it feels so rewarding. Sandboarding down those slopes with nothing but open desert in every direction is the kind of thing you simply cannot replicate anywhere else.

Taboga Dunes, Agadir Not every great sandboarding spot sits deep in the Sahara. The Taboga dunes in Agadir sit at a striking intersection of desert and ocean, with the Atlas Mountains rising in the distance and the Atlantic just beyond the shoreline. Soft sand, ocean air, and a setting that genuinely does not look real. For beginners especially, this is one of the most memorable places to try sandboarding in Morocco.

What to Expect on the Dunes

You do not need to be sporty, fit, or experienced to enjoy sandboarding in Morocco. Most people pick it up within a few runs and spend the rest of the session just having fun. Expect some tumbles, a lot of laughing, and sand in places you did not expect. It is part of the experience.

Sandboarding pairs naturally with a broader Sahara desert tour, camel trekking at sunset, overnight stays in desert camps, and stargazing under some of the clearest skies in the world. There is no better way to experience the Moroccan desert than from the top of a dune with a board under your feet.
